Tattoo Preparation
How to prepare for your tattoo.
A little preparation makes a real difference to how your tattoo feels and how it heals. Here's everything we recommend before your appointment.
Eat properly before the appointment
Have a proper meal beforehand. Low blood sugar can make you feel light-headed — not from the tattoo, but from sitting still and being a bit nervous.
Hydration
Drink plenty of water in the days leading up. Well-hydrated skin takes ink better and tends to feel less sensitive.
Sleep
Get a good night's sleep. Being rested genuinely helps you cope with the session.
Clothing
Wear something comfortable that gives easy access to the area being tattooed, and that you don't mind getting a little ink on.
What to bring
ID, a bottle of water, a snack, and something to keep you occupied (phone, headphones, a book) for longer sittings.
Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs
Don't drink the night before or the day of. Alcohol thins the blood and makes tattooing harder — and we won't tattoo anyone we believe is under the influence.
Skin condition
Come with healthy, unbroken skin in the area. Moisturise in the days before, but don't apply anything on the day itself.
Sunburn
Don't get sunburnt before your appointment. We can't tattoo over sunburn — it'll need to heal first.
Relevant health disclosure
Tell us about any conditions, medications or recent procedures that could affect tattooing. We'll talk it through honestly.
Medication
Some medications affect healing or bleeding. Mention anything you're taking when you book.
Identification
Bring valid ID. We need to confirm you're over 18.
Hygiene
Have a shower before you come — it's just considerate, and it helps you feel fresh and settled.
Arriving on time
Aim to arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in. If you're running late, let us know.
A note on numbing products
Good Soul does not apply topical anaesthetics in the studio. We don't encourage customers to apply numbing products without discussing it with us first — some can affect how the skin takes ink. If you're considering one, talk to us before your appointment.
