Tattoo Aftercare
How to care for your tattoo.
A detailed guide to looking after your new tattoo — and what to do if you're ever worried about how it's healing.
First 24 hours
- Leave the covering on for the time your artist advises, then wash gently with warm water and unscented soap.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel — don't rub — or let it air dry naturally.
- Keep it clean and let it breathe.
Washing
- Wash gently 2–3 times a day with clean hands, warm water and unscented soap.
- Always pat dry — never rub or scrub.
Drying
- Use a clean paper towel, not a fabric one — or let it air dry naturally.
- Pat, don't wipe.
Moisturising
- We recommend waiting until the tattoo has fully dried out and the scab has formed before you start applying moisturiser — generally around the three-day mark is the perfect time.
- Use the recommended balm from your artist and apply only thin layers, two or three times a day — sometimes more if necessary.
- Don't over-moisturise; the skin needs to breathe.
Clothing
- Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area.
- Avoid anything that rubs or sticks.
Sleeping
- If the tattoo is somewhere you sleep on, protect your sheets — a little ink and aftercare can transfer.
- A tip is to take a clean black T-shirt, turn it inside out and lay it over the area where your tattoo would usually make contact with your sheets.
- This way you can avoid leaving any stains, and the dark black T-shirt will hide any ink.
- Wear loose, clean clothing.
Peeling & itching
- Some peeling, flaking and itching is completely normal — it's part of healing.
- Do not pick, scratch or peel it. Let it come away naturally.
What is normal
- Mild redness, tenderness, light scabbing, flaking and itching.
- A slightly dull or cloudy look as the top layer heals.
What is not normal
- Spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus, bad odour, or increasing pain.
- A rash or allergic reaction.
- If you're worried, contact us — and seek medical advice if needed.
Showers
- Quick, lukewarm showers are fine. Don't soak or let hard water beat directly on it.
Baths
- Avoid long soaks. Don't submerge a healing tattoo in a bath.
Swimming
- No swimming (pools, sea, lakes) until the tattoo is fully healed — usually 2–4 weeks.
Gym
- Light exercise is usually fine after a few days. Avoid heavy sweat, friction and shared equipment rubbing the area until it's healed.
Sun exposure
- Keep a healing tattoo out of direct sun. Once healed, use SPF on it long-term to keep the colours crisp.
Long-term care
- Moisturise regularly, keep it out of strong sun or use SPF, and it'll stay looking good for years.
