Your First Tattoo in Birmingham

Thinking about your first tattoo but feeling nervous, anxious or unsure what to expect? You’re exactly the kind of person we built Good Soul Tattoo Studio for.

We believe getting your first tattoo should feel exciting, informed and comfortable — never intimidating or pressured.

No experience needed

First tattoo? You don’t need to know everything.

You don’t need to know the terminology. You don’t need to know exactly what size you want. You don’t need to understand needles, or know which artist you need, or have everything worked out before you get in touch.

Plenty of people arrive with only half an idea — a feeling, a reference image, or just a body part they’d like something on. That’s more than enough to start a conversation.

Asking questions is always welcome here. There’s no such thing as a silly question, and we’d rather you asked too much than too little.

“We take care of the person, not just the tattoo.”

The calm, warmly lit interior of Good Soul Tattoo Studio in Birmingham

For nervous and anxious customers

Nervous about your first tattoo?

Being nervous is extremely common. Most people feel some nerves before their first tattoo — and plenty of experienced collectors still do too. It doesn’t mean you’re not ready; it usually means you care.

So we designed the studio to feel calm, warm, welcoming and relaxed rather than intimidating. The space has dark finishes, warm, soft lighting and a relaxed atmosphere, with a welcoming team and a professional, clean environment throughout.

You won’t be rushed, you won’t be judged, and you can ask anything. This is what we mean by tattooing without intimidation.

The journey, step by step

What happens when you get your first tattoo

From your first message to a healed tattoo, here’s what to expect. Calm, clear and entirely at your pace.

  1. 1

    Tell us your idea

Message us with whatever you have — a sketch, a reference, or just a feeling. You don't need to know the terminology.

  2. 2

We help match you with the right artist

We'll suggest the artist whose style fits your idea, so the work is in the right hands.

  3. 3

We discuss size, placement and expectations

We talk through where it'll sit, how big it should be, and what to realistically expect on the day.

  4. 4

    Your appointment is booked

Once you're happy, we book your appointment. No pressure — we explain the booking fee, price expectations and booking policies clearly before you book.

  5. 5

    We help you prepare

You'll get clear guidance on what to eat, wear and bring so you arrive feeling ready.

  6. 6

You arrive and we talk everything through

On the day, we sit down and talk through the design and the plan before anything happens.

  7. 7

The stencil and placement are checked with you

We apply a stencil so you can see the size and position in the mirror. Nothing is tattooed until you're happy.

  8. 8

The tattoo begins at your pace

When you're ready, we begin. You're in control the whole time.

  9. 9

    Breaks are absolutely fine

Need a pause? Just say so. Breaks are normal and never a problem.

  10. 10

We explain aftercare and check in afterwards

We talk you through aftercare clearly and check in during healing to make sure it's settling well.

First tattoo questions, answered honestly

Common first tattoo questions

The things people ask us most before their first tattoo. If yours isn’t here, just message us — we’ll answer it.

Where should I go for my first tattoo in Birmingham?
Rather than chasing a “best studio” label, look for the things that actually matter for a first tattoo: a clean, professional environment; artists whose work suits the style you want; clear communication before you book; genuine recent reviews; transparent pricing and policies; and a team that makes it easy to ask questions. At Good Soul we put all of this front and centre — you can read our Google reviews, see our artists’ work, message us before booking, and visit the studio at a free First Tattoo Evening before committing to anything.
I'm nervous about getting my first tattoo. Is that normal?
Yes — completely. Most people feel some nerves before their first tattoo, and plenty of experienced collectors still do too. Being nervous doesn't mean you're not ready; it usually means you care about the result. We've built Good Soul around exactly this: a calm, welcoming space where you can ask anything, take your time, and never feel rushed or judged.
Does getting a tattoo hurt?
Tattoos do involve discomfort — that's honest. How much it hurts varies a lot from person to person and depends on placement, how long you're sitting, and your own pain tolerance. Bony or sensitive areas tend to feel more intense; fleshy areas are usually easier. We'll talk you through what to expect for your specific design and placement, and breaks are absolutely fine whenever you need one.
What happens at your first tattoo appointment?
When you arrive we'll talk everything through, confirm the design and placement, and apply a stencil so you can check the size and position before any ink. The tattoo itself begins at your pace, with breaks whenever you need them. Afterwards we'll explain your aftercare clearly and check in with you during healing. You're never left guessing.
How do I choose the right tattoo artist?
Look at each artist's portfolio and find someone whose style naturally fits the design you want — realism, traditional, fine-line, lettering and so on. Style match matters more than geography. At Good Soul you can browse our artists' work online, and if you're unsure, tell us your idea and we'll help match you with the right person.
Do I need to know exactly what tattoo I want before contacting you?
No. Most first-time clients arrive with only half an idea — a feeling, a reference image, or even just a body part. You don't need to know the size, style or placement. Tell us what you're thinking and we'll help shape it into something that works.
Can I ask questions before booking anything?
Always. We'd rather you asked too much than too little. Message us on WhatsApp or through the enquiry form and we'll answer your questions honestly before any booking is mentioned.
Can I come into the studio before committing to a tattoo?
Yes — and we encourage it. We run free First Tattoo Evenings where you can visit the studio, meet the team, see the equipment and ask anything you like with zero pressure to book. It's the easiest way to decide whether we're right for you.
What should I do before my first tattoo?
Eat a proper meal beforehand, stay hydrated, get a good night's sleep, and avoid alcohol the night before. Wear comfortable clothes that give easy access to the area being tattooed. We'll send you fuller preparation guidance before your appointment.
What should I wear to my tattoo appointment?
Wear something comfortable and loose that lets us reach the placement easily. If you're tattooing an arm, a vest or short sleeves work; for a leg or ribs, bring layers so you can adjust. We can provide a cover-up for modesty if needed.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, you're welcome to bring a friend for support. They can accompany you to your appointment and be there afterwards, and we have a small waiting area for them. For hygiene and safety, they won't be in the booth with you while you're being tattooed, but you can take breaks to go and see them whenever you need to.
What if I'm scared of needles?
This is more common than you'd think. Tattoo needles don't look or feel like injection needles — they're fine groupings that deposit ink just under the skin's surface. Most people are surprised by how manageable the sensation is. We'll talk you through it, and you can see the equipment first at a First Tattoo Evening if that helps.
Can I change the size or placement when I arrive?
Yes. Before any ink goes in, we apply a stencil and you check the size and position in the mirror. If it's not right, we adjust it. Nothing is tattooed until you're happy with the placement.
How long will my first tattoo take?
It depends on the size, detail and placement. A small, simple piece can take under an hour; larger or more detailed work takes longer, sometimes across more than one session. We'll give you a realistic time estimate once we understand your design.
What happens after my tattoo is finished?
We'll clean and protect the area, talk you through your aftercare step by step, and give you clear written guidance to take home. We also check in with you during healing. Good aftercare is what keeps a tattoo looking sharp for years.
How do I know if a tattoo studio is clean and professional?
Look for single-use, sealed needles and tubes, surfaces covered with barrier film, fresh gloves, visible hand hygiene, and artists who are happy to explain their process. A studio that's open about hygiene is a good sign. You're welcome to ask us anything about our procedures, or see them for yourself at a First Tattoo Evening.
